UK ‘Balcony Solar’ Revolution: Plug-in Solar Panels Coming Soon to Market

The UK government has announced that plug-in solar panels will be arriving in major retail stores across the country within months. Companies such as Lidl, Amazon, and EcoFlow have partnered with the government to facilitate their market launch.

Key Features

No professional installation required: Simply plug into a household socket and it can be used. No need for electrician’s work, and the cost is relatively low at approximately £400 per set, significantly lower than traditional rooftop solar. The applicable range is very wide and it can be installed on balconies, gardens, exterior walls, etc. However, there are certain limitations on regional power capacity. The government will update the power distribution regulations to allow devices under 800 watts to be directly connected to the grid.

Legal Requirements

The “Future Homes Standard” in the UK has come into effect. It mandates that the vast majority of new residential buildings in England must be equipped with solar panels and clean heating systems. New buildings that meet the standard can save up to £830 in energy costs annually compared to energy-efficient C-class buildings, and their carbon emissions have decreased by at least 75% compared to the 2013 standard.

Advantages of Balcony Photovoltaic Systems

Self-generation and self-consumption

The system converts direct current to household alternating current through micro-inverters and directly supplies continuous standby devices such as refrigerators, routers, and televisions, thereby reducing the amount of electricity drawn from the grid immediately.

Typical energy-saving effect

In Germany, a 600W or 800W system (the maximum allowable output power as per the law) can cover 15-30% of a household’s daily basic electricity consumption.

Anti-reverse current mechanism

The system does not send electricity back to the grid (or the reverse current is extremely low), and there is no need for complex grid connection approval.

No roof ownership requirement

Traditional photovoltaic systems must have roof ownership or property permission, while balcony photovoltaic systems do not rely on the roof. As long as there is a south/east/west-facing balcony, it is sufficient.

Tenant-friendly

The system can be moved, and can be easily dismantled and reinstalled in a new residence when moving.

Solves installation problems

There is no need to worry about old roof load-bearing capacity, waterproof damage, or obstruction from the property.
