Photovoltaic energy comes from the sun, whose lifespan far exceeds the cycle of human civilization, making it virtually inexhaustible. Compared with other forms of energy, PV has a distinct advantage in terms of sustainability.

Continuous Cost Reduction Driven by Technological Iteration

Some still believe PV relies on subsidies, but in fact, grid-parity projects already appeared in China as early as 2018, were gradually promoted in 2019, and by 2020 the industry had fully entered the grid-parity era. Over the past decade, PV technology has advanced rapidly and costs have dropped sharply: module prices have fallen from USD 5 per watt ten years ago to around USD 0.25 per watt today, while product performance has improved significantly. In recent years, projects in regions with excellent sunlight and low non-technical costs, such as the Middle East, have achieved tariffs below USD 0.02 per kWh. It is foreseeable that within the next two to three years, PV will become the most economical power source in most regions worldwide.

Synergistic Development of Energy Storage to Improve System Stability

In the past, PV and wind power were often criticized for intermittency, sometimes even called “junk power.” However, this view is now outdated. The combination of “PV + storage” can effectively solve the problem of discontinuous generation, and storage technologies come in diverse forms. For example, in areas with abundant water and elevation differences, mature and economical pumped hydro can be adopted. On the other hand, chemical storage, though developing at a slower pace than PV, continues to drop in cost: the current storage cost is around USD 0.1 per kWh, only one-third of what it was ten years ago. Industry forecasts suggest that within less than ten years, storage costs could fall by another two-thirds. 

Based on these technological advances and development pathways, China’s PV installed capacity is expected to grow steadily, with potential to reach 3 billion kW in the future. Comprehensive analysis shows that by 2050, PV power generation may account for 39% of the domestic power structure, becoming a key pillar of the energy system. 

After discussing projections, let’s look at global PV installation growth. According to Bloomberg data, since 2008 the cumulative global PV installation has risen from 6.5 GW to 120 GW by 2019. In 2020, growth slowed somewhat due to the pandemic, but the overall upward trend remains irreversible. With the advancement of storage technology, the market outlook for PV is highly promising.
