SNEC 2026: Perovskite/Silicon Tandem Cell Efficiency Milestones

During the SNEC 2026 exhibition, perovskite/silicon tandem cell technology once again became the center of attention. For large-format industrial standard size (approx. 3.1 m²) perovskite/silicon tandem modules, certified by an authoritative third-party institution, the peak power exceeded 900W and the aperture efficiency surpassed 29%. At the same time, the certified efficiency of tandem modules officially crossed the 30% mark, and the certified efficiency of rigid single-junction perovskite modules reached over 23%. Both results were certified by a national metrology institute.

This leap in efficiency marks that perovskite/silicon tandem technology has officially entered the core standard range for high-efficiency cells. It not only provides a more efficient technical solution for ground-mounted distributed PV, but also opens up viable pathways for space energy applications (e.g., space-based PV). In the next step, the industry will focus on stability improvement, encapsulation optimization, and space-environment adaptability research for high-efficiency tandem technology, advancing perovskite technology from high-efficiency iterations for ground-based PV to practical breakthroughs in space energy.

From the perspective of industrialization, as multiple GW-scale production lines are successively launched, perovskite technology is accelerating onto the fast track of large-scale development. Several MW-scale perovskite PV power plants have been built in China, with some projects operating stably for more than one year, laying a solid foundation for the commercialisation of this technology. In the new space-based PV track, perovskite tandem technology, with its advantages of high efficiency, lightweight, and low cost, is seen as an important technical route for next-generation space PV. Some companies have already started space-borne test launches, planning to complete the generation-storage-consumption closed-loop verification in orbit, and leading PV players are accelerating the formation of a space energy alliance.

 

Market Structural Changes: Q1 2026 PV Installation Data

On the other side of technological breakthroughs, the market is also undergoing profound structural changes. According to data released by the National Energy Administration, in the first quarter of 2026, newly grid-connected PV capacity nationwide reached 41,189 MW (about 41.2 GW), with cumulative installed capacity reaching 1,241 GW. Among this, utility-scale PV added 19,619 MW, accounting for 48%; distributed PV added 21,570 MW, accounting for 52%, and residential PV capacity exceeded 22,250 MW.

Provincial Distribution of Newly Added Distributed PV

From the provincial distribution of newly added distributed PV, the top ten provinces/cities are Henan, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hubei, Sichuan, Anhui, Hebei, Fujian, and Jiangxi. Among them, Henan added 2,610 MW of new residential PV capacity, ranking first nationally and accounting for 27% of the country’s total new residential PV.

The trend towards a more balanced installation structure is evident, as the PV market shifts from relying solely on utility-scale plants to a diversified application landscape.
