Oxford PV Completes Construction of 100MW Perovskite Tandem Solar Module Factory

The pace of perovskite industrialization is accelerating. Recently, Oxford PV announced that it has completed the installation of a 100MW perovskite tandem cell production line in Brandenburg, Germany, with commercial production of perovskite cells expected to begin in early 2022.

As a globally recognized leader in the perovskite photovoltaic field, Oxford PV has established its first 100MW-scale mass production line. Apart from Oxford PV, only GCL Nano has invested in a 100MW perovskite production line in Kunshan, China.

The production line is located in Brandenburg an der Havel, Germany, on the site of a former CIGS solar module factory. It is designed to produce heterojunction/perovskite tandem photovoltaic cells. In December 2020, Oxford PV set a world record with 29.52% efficiency and aims to exceed 30% in the future.

After completing the installation, Oxford PV will begin process integration, certification, and mass production, followed by full-scale operations. The facility is expected to operate 24/7 by the end of 2021.

Oxford PV’s proprietary perovskite tandem technology involves depositing a thin layer of perovskite semiconductor material onto a crystalline silicon heterojunction base cell, creating a high-efficiency triple-junction cell. The company, spun out from perovskite research activities at the University of Oxford, holds over 350 patents for its technology.

Additionally, Swiss battery equipment manufacturer Meyer Burger, an investor in Oxford PV, has provided heterojunction equipment and process technology, serving as a turnkey supplier for perovskite equipment. The perovskite process requires three machines, and the heterojunction process another three, totaling six large machines supporting the entire production line.

It is reported that the planned heterojunction tandem cells will be produced on 166mm silicon wafers, with no current plans to expand to 182mm or 210mm sizes. Oxford PV will supply the cells to third-party module manufacturers for final photovoltaic module production. The future modules are expected to have half the current and twice the voltage of conventional crystalline silicon PERC cells.
