Nation’s Largest Linear Fresnel Solar Thermal Integrated Energy Demonstration Project Achieves Full-Capacity Grid Connection

People’s Daily Online, Beijing, September 19 According to an announcement from the China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), the nation’s largest Linear Fresnel solar thermal integrated energy demonstration project – the Hami 1-million-kilowatt “Solar Thermal + Photovoltaic” Project – achieved full-capacity grid connection on the 18th. With an average annual electricity generation of 2.067 billion kilowatt-hours, the project is estimated to save approximately 620,000 tonnes of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 1.63 million tonnes annually. This project pioneers a new cooperative operation model of “solar thermal + photovoltaic,” further enhancing the power grid’s capacity to integrate renewable energy.

Currently, China’s installed capacity of new energy continues to expand. However, the “intermittent and unstable output” of photovoltaic and wind power, influenced by natural conditions, has become a bottleneck restricting the grid’s absorption capacity.As an “energy buffer,” new energy storage technology is a crucial pathway for ensuring the reliable 24/7 operation of the power system and a key support for building a new type of power system. Among these technologies, “Linear Fresnel” is a concentrating solar power (CSP) technology within the field of solar thermal energy storage. It achieves efficient conversion and stable utilization of solar energy through four key stages: concentrating, heat collection, heat storage, and power generation.

According to on-site technical personnel, 260,000 mirrors are arranged in order within the plant, precisely reflecting scattered sunlight onto overhead heat collection pipes. This heats the molten salt inside the pipes to 550 degrees Celsius, and the high-temperature molten salt is then transported to molten salt thermal storage tanks for storage. When electricity generation is required, the high-temperature molten salt releases thermal energy to heat water, converting it into high-temperature, high-pressure steam. This steam drives a steam turbine at high speed, which in turn powers a generator, enabling up to 8 hours of stable electricity generation. This process achieves a fully carbon-neutral chain of “solar energy – thermal energy – electrical energy” conversion.

“Compared to traditional tower-type solar thermal power plants, the Linear Fresnel system does not require the construction of an absorber tower. The mirror and heat collection pipe designs are simpler and more modular, which not only reduces material and construction costs and shortens the construction cycle but also offers greater flexibility in site selection,” said Niu Jianle, the project manager. He added that after grid connection, the project will effectively serve as a peak-shaving foundational regulating power source. Together with the photovoltaic power station, it will form a multi-energy complementary clean energy base, effectively enhancing the stability and controllability of the power plant’s output, thereby helping to increase the grid’s capacity for accepting new energy sources.
