On July 31, the National Energy Administration held a press conference to release the national energy situation for the first half of the year, the grid-connected operation status of renewable energy, the overall electricity supply and demand situation during the summer peak, and the China New Energy Storage Development Report (2025), while also answering questions from reporters.
At the conference, Pan Huimin, Deputy Director of the New Energy and Renewable Energy Department, stated that the installed capacity of renewable energy continues to achieve new breakthroughs. Renewable energy remains the main source of new capacity, accounting for nearly 60% of the national total. In the first half of this year, China added 268 million kW of renewable energy capacity, a year-on-year increase of 99.3%, representing approximately 91.5% of all new capacity. This includes 3.93 million kW of hydropower, 51.39 million kW of wind power, 212 million kW of solar power, and 0.71 million kW of biomass power. By the end of June this year, China’s total installed renewable energy capacity reached 2.159 billion kW, a year-on-year increase of 30.6%, accounting for about 59.2% of the country’s total installed capacity. This includes 440 million kW of hydropower, 573 million kW of wind power, 1.1 billion kW of solar power, and 47 million kW of biomass power.
Renewable energy generation has reached a new level. Renewable energy generation accounts for nearly 40% of the country’s total electricity output, exceeding the combined electricity consumption of the tertiary sector and residential households. The new electricity generated from wind and solar power exceeds the incremental growth in total electricity consumption. In the first half of this year, China’s renewable energy generation reached 1,799.3 billion kWh, a year-on-year increase of 15.6%, accounting for about 39.7% of total electricity generation—surpassing the combined electricity consumption of the tertiary sector (916.4 billion kWh) and residential households (709.3 billion kWh). Among this, wind and solar power generation totaled 1,147.8 billion kWh, a year-on-year increase of 27.4%, accounting for 23.7% of total electricity consumption—an increase of 4.4 percentage points compared to the same period last year. The combined wind and solar power generation increased by 247 billion kWh year-on-year, exceeding the growth in total electricity consumption.
Below is a detailed breakdown of the major renewable energy sources:
(1) Hydropower Construction and Operation
In the first half of 2025, China added 3.93 million kW of grid-connected hydropower capacity, including 1.1 million kW of conventional hydropower and 2.83 million kW of pumped storage. By the end of June, the total installed hydropower capacity reached 440 million kW, including 379 million kW of conventional hydropower and 61.29 million kW of pumped storage. In the first half of the year, large-scale hydropower stations generated 539.8 billion kWh, with an average utilization of 1,377 hours.
(2) Wind Power Construction and Operation
In the first half of the year, China added 51.39 million kW of grid-connected wind power capacity, including 48.9 million kW of onshore wind and 2.49 million kW of offshore wind. By the end of June 2025, the total installed wind power capacity reached 573 million kW, a year-on-year increase of 22.7%, including 528 million kW of onshore wind and 44.2 million kW of offshore wind. In the first half of the year, wind power generation reached 588 billion kWh, a year-on-year increase of 15.6%, with an average utilization rate of 93.2%.
(3) Solar Power Construction and Operation
In the first half of the year, China added 212 million kW of grid-connected solar capacity, including approximately 100 million kW of utility-scale solar and 113 million kW of distributed solar. By the end of June 2025, the total installed solar capacity reached about 1.1 billion kW, a year-on-year increase of 54.1%, including 606 million kW of utility-scale solar and 493 million kW of distributed solar. In the first half of the year, solar power generation reached 559.1 billion kWh, a year-on-year increase of 42.9%, with an average utilization rate of 94%.
(4) Biomass Power Construction and Operation
In the first half of the year, China added 0.71 million kW of biomass power capacity, bringing the total to 46.69 million kW, a year-on-year increase of 3.3%. Biomass power generation reached 111.7 billion kWh, a year-on-year increase of 8.4%.
